US prodding UN Security Council to punish Mugabe
The U.S. pressed fellow U.N. Security Council members Wednesday to impose sanctions to push for change in Zimbabwe, where leaders cannot agree whether to even talk about how to resolve their crisis amid fears of worsening political violence.A draft resolution Washington wants the council to consider proposes freezing the financial assets of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and 11 of his officials and banning them from traveling outside the country.

'Union Government will take off January'

Tsvangirai says conditions not right for talks
Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai said on Wednesday that conditions were not yet right for talks with President Robert Mugabe on forming a unity government to end the violent crisis in the ruined state.Mugabe's officials said they were ready to negotiate after a call by African Union leaders on Tuesday for talks on ending the crisis over the veteran president's re-election in a June 27 one-candidate poll that drew global condemnation.

New Darfur peace envoy is named
The United Nations and the African Union (AU) have appointed the Burkina Faso Foreign Minister, Djibril Bassole, as their new Darfur peace envoy. The UN said Mr Bassole will conduct efforts to mediate between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebels from the region's city of Fasher. He replaces current UN and AU envoys Jan Eliasson and Salim Ahmed Salim.
