Meeting on EPA negotiations opens in Bamako

A meeting on the role of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament in the negotiations on the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) opened here Tuesday, aimed at optimising the advantages of the citizens of this part of the continent.

The meeting objectives are to defy some challenges, notably safeguarding the regional integration, the conduct of negotiations to favour the restoration of an atmosphere of confidence between partners in the region and the European Union and the conclusion in June 2009, of an EPA on accelerated development and regional in tegration, according to the new calendar.

Opening the meeting, President of the Malian Parliament Dioncounda Traore said " the highly pedagogic scope for the people of ECOWAS, who sees its community parliament at work, conscious of its role, the interest of its actions and the extent of its ambitions" can not be under-rated.

Created in August 1994, the ECOWAS Parliament is charged with the responsibility to focus on the West African populations in the integration process and also to inform and sensitise same on the stakes of integration.
